Women’s Day was celebrated on 8th& 9th of March 2019 At Poornaprajna Institute of Management. A collage competition on the theme “transforming Women’s Life” was conducting on 8th March. On 9th March Dr. Shubha H.S., Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Media Studies, addressed the students. She spoke on Media and Women. She narrated stories of women achievers like Stephanie Sinclair, who started “too young to wed” movement and Sindhuthai Sapkal, who dedicated her life to the orphans, to inspire the students. These stories were thought provoking and reached the hearts and minds of the students. Speaking further on media coverage on women and women related aspects she highlighted that it is much less than 50% and within this coverage it is the celebrities, business icons and politicians who are portrayed and not the ordinary women. She opined that this has to change if women empowerment has to happen in the real sense. Analysing the reasons why women empowerment doesn’t happen she stressed on how patriarchal mind-set is built in children through their text books quoting the research done on NCERT text books which revealed that less coverage was given to women and there was more of stereotyping. Finally she opined that women empowerment does not happen just by celebrating women’s day but it has to happen at the grassroots level.
The Director of PIM, Dr. Bharath V. addressed the audience highlighting the relevance of women’s day celebration and the theme of International Women’s Day i.e. “Think equal, build smart, and innovate for change”.
Ms. Saniha introduced the guest and welcomed the gathering, Ms. Meghana proposed vote of thanks and Ms. Alvina Was the Master of Ceremony. The programme was co-ordinated by Mrs. Sujatha G.L., faculty co-ordinator of women empowerment cell.
