Research Environment and Support

The Poornaprajna Institute of Management has been striving to develop itself into an institution of excellence in education and research in consonance with the contemporary and future needs of India through meaningful education, original research of the highest standard and leadership in technological innovation for the industrial growth of the Country. Apart from its faculty involved in research activities, it has a separate research centre involved in full-time research. With the path-breaking innovations in both its curriculum and research, the Institute is rapidly gaining a legendary reputation. In addition to offering Post-graduate Programs, the Institute actively encourages its faculty and other academic staff to undertake sponsored research and consultancy projects in order to strengthen the research profile of the Institute. Research and development is carried in several areas like Panchayath Raj, Rural Development, Environmental Auditing, and Rural Women and Technology. To ensure adequate support to the investigator in terms of financial assistance, the institute guides and cooperates with the investigator in respect to the procedure of approaching various funding agencies. The Institute ensures that the resources are released on time along with the timely submission of the utilization certificate by the investigator. In order to enhance the efficiency of the researcher, we have the policy of granting Special/Extraordinary Leave besides study leave and also facilitate allocation of time-table as per the convenience of the researcher.

Research Facilities

Poornaprajna Institute of Management recognizes and understands the importance of Research and hence strives to support the researchers by providing infrastructural facilities like State of Art Computer Laboratory (having requisite Software), a digital Library, reputed E-Journals (like N-List and  J-Gate) & Books. A separate chamber for researchers houses all such facilities which is conducive for carrying out research. The major activity of the institute is to provide support to research projects in wide range of topics. In addition to the above conferences, workshops and publications, which are of relevance to research, are also being supported with financial assistance. The Poornaprajna Centre for Research also guiding the research activities of the Institute.

He completed PhD on the topic Capacity Utilization in Small Scale Industries, at the Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research in Business Administration of Vinayaka Missions University, Salem, in the year 2009, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. K. Sridhar Shetty, Director, S.M. Shetty Institute of Management Science, Pawai, Mumbai. His Co-Guide was  Dr. K. Rajendran, Dean Research of Vinayaka Missions  University, Salem. He also completed his M.Phil (Management, 2006) from Alagappa University, Karikudy, Tamil Nadu under the supervision of Dr. Sureshramana Mayya. the present Dean of Poornaprajna Institute of Management.  His publications are as follows:

                              Bharathi Karanth, Associate Professor, Poornaprajna Institute of Management, Udupi

She has been awarded PhD Degree in Commerce (2018) on her thesis on “Fund Management in Non-Profit Organisations: A Study of Development of NGOs in Coastal Karnataka”, under the guidance of Dr. Yashavantha Dongre, Professor and Director, Planning Monitoring & Evaluation Board (PMEB) of Mysore University. She also completed her M.Phi (2008) under the supervision of Dr. M. R. Hegde, the former Director of Poornaprajna Institute of Management. Her important publications are as follows:

                                  Naveen Kumar, Associate Professor, Poornaprajna Institute of Management, Udupi.

His PhD work is on finance.  The details are as follows:

  1. The work was carried on studying the initial and long-run performance of public issues in India – Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) as well as Follow-on Public Offerings (FPOs) or Seasoned Equity Offerings (SEOs)
  2. The sample consists of over 3,000 public issues – around 2,900 IPOs and around 150 FPOs that came to the market during the period 1992-2011
  3. Initial performance (underpricing) of IPOs is studied considering the issue price and different prices (opening, high, low, and closing) on the listing day
  4. Long-run performance of IPOs is studied using event-study methodology; Cumulative Average Abnormal Returns (CAARs) are calculated for up to 5 years (1,250 trading days) starting from the closing price on a listing day
  5. Five different market indices – BSE 100, BSE 200, BSE 500, BSE Sensex, and CNX Nifty have been used to compute abnormal performances – both initial (underpricing) and long-run
  6. The significance of both these returns is tested using a parametric t-test
  7. FPO underpricing is computed using two methods – close-to-offer and offer-to-close; to compute market-adjusted returns BSE 100 and BSE Sensex returns for the same period are used
  8. The significance of FPO underpricing is tested using the same parametric t-test
  9. Abnormal returns using market model surrounding FPO issue opening is computed by taking an event window of 61 days (-30 to +30) with FPO issue opening as 0th day and using an estimation period of 250 (-31 to -280) days
  10. To test the significance of AAR and CAAR during the 61 days event window, the excess returns are standardised before they are aggregated and the standardised aggregates form the basis of the test statistics
