Enhancing Research Skills through SPSS Training

The Research Cell at PIM took a significant step towards advancing the research capabilities of 2nd-year MBA students by organizing a comprehensive workshop on Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Dr. Bharathi Karanth Coordinator of the Research Cell, conducted the workshop, providing invaluable guidance to the participants.

Workshop Structure: The workshop spanned over one week, commencing on May 22nd and concluding on May27th, 2023. The sessions were conducted in the institute’s computer lab to facilitate hands-on learning.

The 2nd-year MBA students were divided into two batches of 30 each for optimal engagement. The first batch attended the workshop on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, while the second batch had sessions on alternate days (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday).

Content and Learning Objectives: The workshop aimed to empower students with practical skills in utilizing SPSS for research purposes. Dr. Bharathi Karanth focused on various aspects, including data tabulation and analysis techniques, with an emphasis on applying SPSS features such as chi-square, ANOVA, regression, correlation, and descriptive statistics.

Practical Application: The students were required to download the trial version of SPSS, available for free for learning purposes. Armed with this software, participants actively engaged in hands-on exercises, applying learned techniques to their individual research projects. The workshop particularly emphasized hypothesis testing, chart creation, and other essential skills.

Outcome: The culmination of the workshop saw students equipped with the proficiency to apply SPSS software effectively in their research studies. This knowledge is crucial, considering that the 2nd-year MBA students are tasked with conducting a research study and submitting a report to the university, accounting for 100 marks.

Conclusion: The SPSS workshop proved to be a pivotal experience, providing a platform for students to not only acquire essential research skills but also to practically apply them in their academic pursuits. The Research Cell at PIM remains committed to fostering an environment of continuous learning and skill development.
