A Skywatch programme at Poornaprajna Institute of Management

A skywatch programme was organized at PIM  on 12th September 2018 at Poornaprajna Institute of Management. Dr A.P Bhat, Professor, Head of the Department of Physics and Coordinator of Poornaprajna Amateur Astronomic club narrated the events and member of PAAC demonstrated it through Telescope. Students saw the sunspots through a refraction telescope of four inches with an aluminium filter in the terrace of Poornaprajna Institute of Management.
Explaining the importance of sunspots, A.P. Bhat, said that on an average one could see a maximum of 14 sunspots in a month, while the minimum could be as low as four to five sunspots. The diameter of the sunspot ranges from 18 kilometres to 1,600 kilometres. The low temperature in a sunspot ranges from 3,000 Kelvin to 4,500 Kelvin,” said Prof. Bhat. For the students, watching the sunspots over the telescope was an experience to treasure.

Dr Bharath, the Director of the PIM said that experience of watching a sunspot was indescribable. The planets, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus, are shining in the evening sky was observed. The crescent Venus, four moons of Jupiter, the beautiful rings of Saturn are observed through three telescopes, one 8 inch reflector, two and 4-inch refractors. A large number of students and public witnessed the program. 

On 19th September 2018, skywatch cum demonstration of new camera was held at the same venue. Sri Sri Sri Vishwapriya Thirtha Swamiji also attended the programme and graced the event. Many members of the public and students and faculty of PIM attended the programme.
